What is Square Dancing?
Itīs a group of 8 dancers, 2 on each side, forming a square. A caller directs the dancers through calls to a background of music. The dancers know the moves, but there is no fixed order. So the dancers have to pick up the moves and to react quickly. The caller has got almost boundless possibilities to program the square dance moves and the dancers depend on each other to keep the dance moving.
Square Dancing is a perfect regular exercise to keep you in shape but reacting quickly to the caller keeps you mentally on your toes as well.
We dance to a whole range of music from western and country to pop and all-time favourites.
Where is Square Dancing from?
Many folk dances were taken by immigrants to America from Europe. American square dancing has developed over the years from these roots as the various dance styles of the immigrant communities merged together with the integration of the different nationalities. The moves and calls have been defined and set in programmes, e.g. mainstream (approx. 70 moves) and plus (further 30 moves). Square dancing was brought back to Europe in the 1940s by American troops.
Where can you learn Square Dancing?
You learn the moves attending a class on approximately 40 class nights. Able to do the moves up to the mainstream programme you can dance at outside events, worldwide.
The Swinging Pinguins Lübeck welcomes new dancers for enrolment about every three years. We last recruited in September 2010. Please contact us.
